23rd-Oct-2005 12:28 am - Opening party
Me2009, Main
Me with old and new students Yesterday there was a new season's opening in the dormitory I have been staying for the last year. The dormitory is run by the Parlament of Berlin and they award stipends only for one year -- therefore students are supposed to live here for one year only, from October to October. If you look around you you'll discover it is october again, so we have fresh fish in our dormitory.
It is also quite usual to arrange parties in our dormitory, whenever the next season opens or closes. I am lucky to attend already the 4th party here, in ISB and this time it didn't differ much from what I've previously seen.
What I like in all these parties are the introductory words. Frau Fritsche is always aware that regular inhabitants here are not so interessted in the history of the house, especially if the food is on the table right in front of the audience, so she always cut it short. Also this time, she introduced new tutors, who'll guide over us for all this time and invited everyone to help oneself.
The original idea of me to come to the event was not only to eat (what I definitely like!! :) ), but mostly to speak German and probably English, since I need them both for my thesis and for the future. Regrettably everyone spoke Russian. First, the table I was sitting by was a typically russian table, almost everybody (except for one lady) were from the "old generation" of ISB-diggers. I tried to parade with my English talking to Oleg, but we finished after "Let's speak English -- Ok! -- How much watches? -- For whom how!". Wow, it was refreshing!
In the evolution of the evening I spoke to a nice Estonian girl, a phylosopher. To be honest, I am a little bit afraid of phylosophers, because I can't really understand their subject and it makes me worry. I have several friedns who are phylosophers and they all look as super-heroes for me, especially those, who already have a promotion. But she was very nice and we talked mostly about my beloved topic -- languages. She introduced me into the case system in Estonian, which showed some resemblanse with Tatar and Esperanto mixed up together ;) Still, I'd like to start with Finnisch, the language is very interesting for me and it must be still doeble, I am not so old yet.
The usual problem of these parties is that nobody really dances. Supposed to be a "get-together-party", this party actually always converts to "eat-together-party" -- people it, chat with they neighbours and don't like to move. Pity! We tried it several time to make people dance, but all our hints, like dimmed illumination and dance music, were futile. So, a company of Russians who were starving for me just left to continue the fest in another place.
So, it went as usual -- nourishing and tasty, but not much interesting and really "get-to-know" event.

Today we WON in Ampelmächencup, Details will follow.
